Automotive electrical equipment English version3Starting systemChapter 3 The Starting SystemOperation and purposeThe battery sends current to the starting motor when the driver turns the ignition s

r segments brushes brush holder terminal post, etc.The commutator assembly is located on the armature shaft and is responsible for reversing the direction of the current flow in the armature windings. This ensures that the magnetic field produced by the armature windings always interacts with the magnetic field of the stationary magnet in the same direction, resulting in continuous rotation of the rotor. See Fig.3-6 on page 84Starting motor circuitIn order to start the engine, the starting motor circuit needs to be closed. This circuit includes the battery, ignition switch, starting motor, and various cables and connectors. When the ignition switch is turned to START, current flows from the battery to the starting motor, causing the pinion gear to engage with the ring gear and the engine to start rotating. Once the engine is running, the ignition switch is released, and the circuit is opened, disconnecting the starting motor from the battery. See Fig.3-7 on page 85Common problems and maintenanceThe most common problems with the starting system are a dead battery, a faulty ignition switch, a bad starter motor, or corroded cables and connections. Regular maintenance includes checking the battery voltage and connections, cleaning and lubricating the commutator and brushes, and replacing any worn or damaged parts. It is also important to ensure that the engine is properly tuned and that the fuel and ignition systems are functioning correctly, as these can affect the starting performance of the engine
